Stroudsburg Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop from Seasoned I-80 Travelers.
I-80 traffic & speed traps (especially around Exits 302–310): The stretch through the Delaware Water Gap and Stroudsburg can back up badly on weekends, holidays, and Friday afternoons (NY/NJ shore traffic plus Poconos travelers). Local and state police are active near: Exits 302 (Bartonsville) and 304 (Main Stroudsburg exit) The Delaware Water Gap bridge area (eastbound into NJ especially). If you’re flexible, avoid roughly 3–7 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Sunday; even 30–45 minutes earlier or later can make a big difference.
Use the “back way” if I-80 clogs near Stroudsburg: For short local detours, Route 611 roughly parallels I‑80 through Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg and is often faster when there’s an accident or construction.
Restroom & stretch-your-legs options better than a random gas station: The Delaware Water Gap Welcome Center (eastbound): Just before crossing into NJ. Clean bathrooms, quick scenic overlook of the river, and a fast leg stretch without going into town. If you prefer walking a couple minutes, From Exit 310 (Delaware Water Gap) you can be on the McDade Recreational Trail or near short river overlooks very quickly—nice if you need a 10–15 minute sanity break after driving the mountains.
Weather & terrain quirks through the Gap: The section over the ridge and down through the Delaware Water Gap can be Foggy in the early morning and at night, even when it’s clear elsewhere, Icy/windy faster than the flatter stretches (winter and shoulder seasons especially). Trucks tend to bunch up on climbs and descents, and drivers sometimes brake late going downhill. Keep a little extra following distance through the long grades west of Stroudsburg, the bridge area at the NJ line.
