The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) reports that overnight single lane reductions will begin May 6 on I-80 east of Sparks as they conduct preliminary utility and geotechnical survey work in advance of future I-80 widening between Vista Boulevard and USA Parkway.
When: May 6 through July between 8:00 pm and 5:00 am nightly
What: Intermittent single lane closures on short sections of both directions of I-80 between Vista Boulevard and USA Parkway.
Intermittent interstate shoulder closures will also take place.
Motorists are advised to leave extra travel time and anticipate moderate travel delays when driving through the area.
The lane reductions are for survey, subsurface utility location and continuing geotechnical engineering prior to final engineering design for future interstate widening.
Beginning as early as 2027, NDOT plans to widen and improve I-80 between Vista Boulevard and the State Route 439 (USA Parkway) interchange. Certain interstate bridges will be replaced, roadway shoulders widened, and interchange improvements and other enhancements made to improve traffic mobility and safety for the as many as 50,000 vehicles which travel the interstate daily.
Traffic has increased more than 70 percent over the past ten years. In a recent five-year period, an average of 144 crashes occurred every year on this section of interstate. Interstate widening and improvements are projected to cut total crash rates by approximately 20 percent when compared to not improving the interstate.
