The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) reports that the I-80 eastbound Exit 30 ramp to Howard Boulevard is scheduled to be closed and detoured for approximately two weeks beginning April 20 as the Bridges over Howard Boulevard replacement project advances in Mount Arlington, Morris County.
Beginning at 3:00 a.m. Monday, April 20, until 6:00 a.m. Friday, May 1, the I-80 eastbound Exit 30 ramp to Howard Boulevard will be closed and detoured. The ramp closure is necessary to perform traffic signal foundation work at the end of the ramp.
The following detour will be in place:
I-80 eastbound Exit 30 ramp to Howard Boulevard Detour:
- Motorists on I-80 eastbound wishing to take the Exit 30 ramp to Howard Boulevard/Mount Arlington will be directed to continue on I-80 eastbound
- Take Exit 34 to Route 15/Wharton/Dover/Sparta
- Stay right at the end of the ramp to continue on North Main Street/CR 634 toward Route 15/Picatinny Arsenal
- Turn right onto Route 15 southbound
- Take the first ramp to I-80 westbound/Delaware Water Gap
- Take Exit 30 to Howard Boulevard/Mount Arlington
The $65.4 million federally funded project will replace the existing bridges carrying I-80 eastbound and I-80 westbound over Howard Boulevard/CR 516, which are in poor condition. Improvements will include raising the vertical clearance of each bridge, widening the
shoulders, lengthening acceleration and deceleration lanes on I-80, and widening the ramps to and from Howard Boulevard. The Howard Boulevard intersection will be reconfigured to improve operational performance.
The project will also include upgraded traffic signals and lighting, and ADA-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks. Sidewalks will be extended to the Mount Arlington Train Station for improved pedestrian and bicycle safety and mobility. The project is expected to be complete in summer 2027.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
