The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) reports that the I-80 westbound Truck Rest Area is scheduled to be closed for 10 days, starting tonight, as the I-80 Bridges over Howard Boulevard bridge replacement project advances in Mount Arlington, Morris County.
Beginning at 8:00 p.m. tonight, Thursday, May 23, until 8:00 p.m., Sunday, June 2, the Truck Rest Area on I-80 westbound at mile post 32.3, just before Exit 30 to Howard Boulevard/Mount Arlington, is scheduled to be closed for milling and paving, as well as curb repairs. If work is completed earlier, the Truck Rest Stop will reopen sooner.
The $65.4 million federally funded project will replace the existing bridges carrying I-80 eastbound and I-80 westbound over Howard Boulevard/CR 516, which are in poor condition. Improvements will include raising the vertical clearance of each bridge, widening the
shoulders, lengthening acceleration and deceleration lanes on I-80, and widening the ramps to and from Howard Boulevard. The Howard Boulevard intersection will be reconfigured to improve operational performance.
The project will also include upgraded traffic signals and lighting, and ADA-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks. Sidewalks will be extended to the Mount Arlington Train Station for improved pedestrian and bicycle safety and mobility. The project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
