Pennsylvania officials are reminding drivers to stay safe on the roads this summer. They want everyone to put phones away, avoid driving impaired, and slow down during busy travel times.
Starting June 5, 2026, drivers caught using a hand-held phone while driving will face a $50 fine plus court costs under Paul Miller’s Law. This rule applies even when stopped in traffic or at a red light. You can still use hands-free options for calls, GPS, or music, and you’re allowed to call for help in an emergency.
The law honors Paul Miller Jr., who died in a crash caused by a distracted driver in 2010. His mother, Eileen Miller, has pushed for stronger rules against phone use behind the wheel.
Police will step up enforcement soon. From June 15 through the Fourth of July weekend, officers will run checkpoints and patrols to catch impaired drivers. Then, from July 6 to August 16, they’ll focus on speeding, tailgating, running red lights, and other risky behaviors.
Pennsylvania expects millions of visitors this summer for big events like the FIFA World Cup, the MLB All-Star Game, and America250PA celebrations. Officials stress that safe driving helps everyone reach their destinations without trouble.
Last year’s holiday weekend saw many alcohol- and drug-related crashes. Speeding also caused serious wrecks. Drivers are urged to stay focused, use turn signals, let others merge, and check traffic conditions ahead of time.
