Paterson Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop from Seasoned I-80 Travelers.
Watch the I‑80 / Route 19 / Garden State Parkway tangle: The interchange around Exit 57–60 (Route 19 to downtown Paterson, Garden State Parkway, Route 20) comes up fast with short merge/weave areas. If you’re just passing through, stay in the middle lanes and be ready for sudden lane drops and last‑second signal changes from locals who know the exits by feel, not by signs.
Time your pass to avoid the “shoulder rush hour”: Standard rush: roughly 6:30–9:00 a.m. eastbound and 3:30–7:00 p.m. westbound. There’s also a mini‑rush late night: around 10 p.m.–midnight, especially Fridays, as people head to/leave from nightlife and the malls (Willowbrook, Garden State Plaza area nearby). If you can, aim for late morning (10 a.m.–noon) or mid‑afternoon (1–3 p.m.) for the smoothest pass.
Unmarked and median police spots: New Jersey State Police and local units frequently sit on the median and on short on‑ramps near Paterson to catch speeders—especially downhill stretches and just after lane‑drop zones. Speed limit drops come quickly, so don’t ride with cruise control locked at “New York driver” speeds; keep it conservative through the Paterson stretch.
Weather + truck traffic combo is no joke: In rain, snow, or freeze/thaw, expect standing water and rougher pavement in the right lanes, especially near bridges and overpasses. This corridor carries a lot of trucks; they bunch up near uphill grades and interchanges. If it’s wet or icy, give trucks extra room and avoid lingering beside them—the spray and potholes can get bad.
