Avoid peak construction zones: I-80 around Iowa City regularly has lane closures, especially near the I-380 interchange and Coralville. Check this website right before you hit the area; locals actually use it because closures can change week to week.
Hawkeye game days change everything: If there’s a University of Iowa football game, traffic on I-80 and I-380 can get messy hours before and after kickoff, especially near exits 242–246. Expect heavier patrol presence and slower speeds, even on the interstate.
Watch winter and shoulder-season weather: Snow, freezing rain, and strong crosswinds hit hard on the open stretches west and east of town. Conditions can deteriorate quickly, so locals slow down well below the limit even when the road “looks” OK.
Use Coralville for quick food and gas: Exit 240–242 (Coralville) has the densest cluster of fast food, sit-down spots, and fuel—far more than the sparse exits to the west and east. It’s the easiest place to pull off, refuel, and get back on I-80 fast.
