The Nebraska Department of Transportation reports that now through fall 2023, construction on the I-80 Accident Investigation Sites project will be underway, weather permitting. During this project, there will be intermittent lane and shoulder closures on exit ramps from I-80 at Giles Road, 84th Street, 72nd Street, 60th Street, and 13th Street. Ramps will remain open with restrictions. The construction of a concrete shoulder is for the Nebraska State Patrol to clear the roadway and investigate crashes.

Construction on this project is expected to be complete by fall 2023. Once the accident investigations sites are constructed and in use, law enforcement will provide directions to drivers involved in an incident to proceed to an accident investigation site, if necessary.

The accident investigation sites will play a vital role in ensuring the safety of both the Nebraska State Patrol and the driving public because they will allow law enforcement to determine the causes and factors contributing to incidents outside of the flow of I-80 traffic. Additionally, quick clearance of incidents from I-80 to accident investigate sites will clear the roadway for traffic to continue to follow normally on I-80.
