The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) will officially launch the 2022 construction season with an I-80 bridge slide over the freeway this weekend. I-80 will be closed in both directions between Foothill Drive and 700 East in Salt Lake City from Friday, April 8, at 9:00 p.m. through Sunday, April 10, at 1:00 p.m.
What exactly is an I-80 bridge slide?
During this closure, construction crews will demolish the existing 1700 East bridge over I-80 and slide the new bridge – which has been constructed next to the existing bridge – into place. This innovative method of bridge construction, pioneered in Utah, reduces delays and traffic restrictions for drivers. The bridge was originally built in the 1960s and is due for replacement. The new bridge will provide a smoother ride for drivers and will enhance safety for cyclists and pedestrians, with a new 14-foot-wide path on the west side along with a new sidewalk and bike lane on the east side.
The project is one of 175 under construction in Utah in 2022, with a total value of $2.5 billion. UDOT will reveal its most impactful projects for drivers at the media availability.
