The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced overnight lane closures on I-80 eastbound near Exit 53/Route 46 eastbound in Wayne, Passaic County, beginning Friday, October 23. The closures will allow crews to restripe the exit ramp and shift traffic to the right, creating a work zone on the ramp’s left side.
From 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 23, until 8:00 a.m. Saturday, October 24, motorists should expect:
- I-80 eastbound mainline: The right lane will be closed before Exit 53/Route 46 eastbound. At least two lanes will remain open.
- Exit 53 ramp to Route 46 eastbound: The left lane will be closed. The right lane will remain open.
Both lanes are scheduled to reopen by 8 a.m. Saturday, with traffic on the Exit 53 ramp shifted to the right.
The work is part of the Route 23/I-80/Route 46 Interchange project, designed to improve mobility, reduce congestion and enhance safety by adding connections missing from the existing interchange.
The project includes new ramps and acceleration lanes connecting Route 23 southbound to I-80 westbound and I-80 eastbound to Route 46 westbound and Route 23 northbound and southbound. Additional improvements include a replacement ramp and acceleration lane to provide greater weaving distance on Route 46 westbound, as well as extended acceleration lanes from Route 23/Route 46 eastbound to I-80 eastbound.
The project also includes two new bridges, bridge-deck reconstruction, adjustments to the I-80 bridge over the Passaic River, overhead sign improvements, new guiderail and 10 new drainage basins with accompanying drainage structures.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
