The Illinois Department of Transportation reports that, as part of ongoing efforts to rebuild I-80, stage changes and ramp closures are scheduled to take place, weather permitting, beginning Tuesday, March 18. Overnight lane closures are scheduled to take place over two nights to prepare for a new traffic pattern.
Tuesday, March 18
- Eastbound I-80
- 8:00 PM: Eastbound I-80 reduced to one lane from east of I-55 to west of Larkin Ave (IL 7).
- 5:00 AM: Lanes reopen with new traffic pattern.
- Westbound I-80
- 8:00PM: Westbound I-80 reduced to one lane from Chicago St (U.S.52/IL 53) to west of Larkin Ave. At the same time, the Westbound I-80 ramp to southbound Larkin Ave will close.
- 5:00 AM: Lanes reopen with new traffic pattern.
- Eastbound I-80 ramp to Southbound Larkin Ave is anticipated to reopen in October. Follow posted detour.
Thursday, March 20
- Eastbound I-80
- 8:00 PM: Eastbound I-80 reduced to one lane from west of Larkin Ave to Wheeler Ave. At the same time, Eastbound I-80 ramp to Southbound Larkin Ave, and the Southbound Larkin Ave ramp to Eastbound I-80, will close.
- 5:00 AM: Lanes will reopen with new traffic pattern.
- Both ramps will remain closed. Eastbound I-80 ramp to Southbound Larkin Ave is expected to reopen in late August. The Southbound Larkin Ave ramp to Eastbound I-80 is expected to reopen in early September. Follow posted detour.
- Westbound I-80
- 9:00 PM: Westbound I-80 reduced to one lane between west of Larkin Ave to east of I-55.
- 5:00 AM: Lanes reopen with new traffic pattern.
The new configuration will allow work to continue on the mainline lanes and is estimated to remain in place through the fall.
Drivers should expect lane shifts, overnight lane closures and significant delays. Allow extra time for trips through this area and pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones.
